Disciplinary processes
Creating a business where staff know there are no surprises when they do something wrong is very important.
"You’re sacked", or "don’t come Monday" are not comments you should make to staff. Remember there is no such thing as “instant dismissal”, and nothing an employee does means you can “fire” them on the spot.
• Everyone knows about (both employees and managers),
• Is fair and lets the staff member have their say
• Deals with the facts
• Takes time to think about what the employee says
• Follows “natural justice” or what any other person would probably decide given the same facts
Getting this process right is important. Taking the time to follow the process gives you a much stronger position if you ever need to tell a Judge in an Employment Court why your decision was the right one to make.
The process is not really hard or time consuming, so make sure you have one in place to cover your butt.
